About SmartPoints

The SmartPoints system, introduced by WW (Weight Watchers) around 2015, is designed to help you make healthier food choices. It assigns a single number to foods and beverages based on their nutritional content, specifically focusing on:

  • Calories: Form the baseline of the calculation.
  • Saturated Fat: Increases the SmartPoints value, as these are fats to limit.
  • Sugar: Also increases the SmartPoints value, encouraging lower intake of added and free sugars.
  • Protein: Lowers the SmartPoints value, promoting foods higher in protein which can contribute to satiety.

By prioritizing foods lower in sugar and saturated fat, and higher in protein, the SmartPoints system nudges you towards more wholesome and filling options. Different WW plans (like Blue, Green, or Purple) offer varying lists of ZeroPoint™ foods and daily/weekly point allowances but use the same SmartPoints calculation for non-ZeroPoint foods.
